We’ve all been there before: you’re packing for a trip but need to keep it light because you’ve likely only got a backpack or carry-on luggage to work with.
Well, that was me a few weeks ago when I was prepping for my trip to Kihei, Hawaii. I was struggling with what shoes to pack that would safely and efficiently take me from the high-elevation hikes and winding paths on the Road to Hana to the streets of Lahaina, Makena Beach State Park and the many other beautiful places I explored over the next 12 days.
Luckily, I had already seen a few of my fellow hikers wearing Vasque shoes and I knew heading to their website would be a good start.
Vasque Trailbender II
Being quite honest, one of the first reasons I was drawn to the new Vasque Trailbender II was the colours! I love how they popped and the shoes looked extremely comfortable just from the photos. They were quite versatile and are made for trail running, lost distance running, ultra marathons and mixed trail conditions, which was a perfect mix for all of the activities I was looking to do.
Needless to say, I was extremely excited when the shoes arrived, and they were a great light-weight option to pack.
Where my shoes took me
These shoes went EVERYWHERE! Here’s a quick list of some of the activities I did in my trail runners and why I loved them:
- Riding mopeds – I rode my moped at least 20 miles through the winding roads of the Maui island. My new kicks worked really well because they have great grip on the soles and they are also moisture wicking, keeping my feet nice and dry even in the 30-degree heat.
- Trail running – There are so many places to adventure on the Maui island, and the Road to Hana is packed with options. I took my runners straight from a short trail run to hiking into a waterfall and sitting on the cliffs of Wai’anapanapa State Park.
- Lahaina – Lahaina is a beautiful, history-rich town that receives a ton a foot traffic, with over 2 million people visiting the town each year. I had my runners in the car and boy was I glad I slipped out of my beach sandals and into these before exploring the town. The extra cushioned sole for the runners was super helpful for times like this where I was spending a lot of time walking around and exploring shops.
Where they can take you
After wearing my Vasque Trailbender’s for over a week I truly believe they can take you just about anywhere! Here are a few spots in Alberta I can’t wait to explore in these shoes:
Heart mountain: These shoes would be great for a quick scramble at Heart Mountain, located in the Bow Valley Area. The high-performance grip will also be ideal for the 875m elevation gain!
Diamond T Loop: This trail, located just west of Bragg Creek in Kananaskis Country, is a mild 4.5km and usually starts off with a damp trail due to the marshland that is near. The Vasque Trailbender II shoes will be perfect for these mixed trail conditions and the 130m elevation gain. If you’re feeling up it, this would be a great spot for a short trail run!
