At Hike365 we love to adventure all year long! We do, however, have to admit that there is something so delightful about spring skiing! We recently took a crew out to Nakiska Ski Area to take some of the first turns of the spring season.
Getting to Nakiska is easy. It’s about 1 hour away from Calgary, making it a prime location for a quick day trip, with plenty of time to be home for dinner. Thank you to Taryn O’Flynn, Michelle Locke and Andrea Boras for joining us on this adventure! Photography by A.V Wakefield of North Birch Grove
If you’re a mountain regular, you know all about the interesting conversations that take place on the lift! As we made our way up for our first run, we had the pleasure of learning more about Taryn O’Flynn, owner of the Canmore-based jewelry design business, Briwok.
When Taryn is on the hill, she recommends jewelry that you can put on and leave on. Something like her Sally Lariat necklace, which she says isn’t too boujee on the slopes but is cool enough to spice up your look for après ski activities.
Nakiska has had over 300 cm of snow this season, and we’re betting there will be even more! Spring skiing at Nakiska is made even more exciting because there is a good chance you’ll catch a powder day. Because of the resort’s location in the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, it can get hit with upslope storms that other ski hills west of Canmore don’t always get. You can always keep tabs on the conditions via the snow cams.
Nakiska provides great terrain for mountain adventurers of all levels and Michelle Locke, who became the first female Canadian snowboarder to ever qualify for the Freeride World Tour, can attest to that! Michelle started her snowboarding adventures in Newfoundland and moved to Banff 21 years ago to continue pursuing her passion. We loved watching Michelle rip it up and take advantage of all the mountain had to offer. You can see Michelle’s 2018 stats here.
We ended the day the best way we know how—an après ski patio session! We enjoyed some of our favourite drinks including beer, caesars and even a hot chocolate spiked with fireball and topped with whip cream. For an after-ski bite, we shared top-notch nachos. You know, the kind where the cheese is layered and the ratio of cheese to chip is juuuuust right!
We chatted about what we love about the outdoors and Andrea Boras said what we were all thinking. She said being outdoors gives her a feeling a freedom, peace and contentment. The outdoors challenges her and never backs down.
Are you ready for spring skiing? You can head to the Nakiska website to pre-purchase your tickets and save some cash.
See you on the slopes!
